A professional pool closing—also known as winterization—prepares an outdoor pool for cold weather to protect the equipment and structure from freezing damage.
The standard process typically includes these key steps:
- Balancing the Water Chemistry: Adjusting the pH, alkalinity, and calcium hardness, followed by adding winterizing chemicals (like shock and algaecide) to keep the water clear and prevent algae growth during the off-season.
- Lowering the Water: Lowering the water level below the skimmer mouth to prevent water from freezing in above-ground pools.
- Draining and Blowing Out Lines: Removing water from the pump, filter, heater, and plumbing lines using a specialized air blower, then sealing the lines with winter expansion plugs to prevent pipe bursts.
- Installing the Safety Cover: Securing a heavy-duty mesh or solid safety cover over the pool using brass anchors embedded in the deck to keep leaves, debris. Due to liability we do not place covers on above ground pools, but we will winterize the pool to the point that the only thing left to do is place the cover on the pool by the owner.
